Oil tanker overturns on Southern Bypass, section temporarily closed
KeNHA said the closure was necessary to allow emergency crews to respond to the accident and clear the resulting oil spillage from the road.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has temporarily closed a section of the Nairobi Southern Bypass after an oil tanker overturned, blocking the Kikuyu-bound lanes between the Virtual Weighbridge and the Ngong Interchange.
In a statement, KeNHA said the closure was necessary to allow emergency crews to respond to the accident and clear the resulting oil spillage from the road.

"Motorists are advised to use Waiyaki Way and Uhuru Highway as alternative routes as the affected area is being cleared," read the statement.
“This is due to an oil tanker that has overturned on the road, blocking traffic passage.
The Authority urged road users to exercise caution and cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals on site.
In a public notice dated June 28, 2025, the authority also announced a temporary partial closure of the Nairobi-bound carriageway of the A8 Road between General Motors Roundabout (FUSO Simba Colt) and the Southern Bypass Interchange at Ole Sereni.
The closure is set to begin on Saturday, July 5 and end on Saturday, July 12, 2025, to facilitate essential highway maintenance works.
During this time, heavy vehicles with a gross weight exceeding 3.5 tons and those heading to the Southern Bypass will be diverted to exit the main highway at the Kyang’ombe Slip Road through Old Mombasa Road.
Other vehicles will use a single lane maintained through the affected section.
Additionally, Nairobi motorists should note that major roads in the city will be closed this Sunday, July 6, to facilitate the Nairobi City Marathon.
Several key routes will be closed to vehicular traffic from 10:00 pm Saturday through Sunday afternoon.
